The One Room HGTV Star Breegan Jane Will Never Forget

Interior designers and home industry experts work on an impressive number of spaces throughout their careers. But there are certain rooms that are truly unforgettable. So, to give designers a chance to revisit their favorite projects—and to bring you inspiration for your own home—we’re sharing the one room these pros will remember forever.

It takes a special kind of designer to handle the intense, life-changing projects on HGTV's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. As anyone who watched the original iteration of the show knows, these aren't your run-of-the-mill, surface-level makeovers. Instead, the designers are tasked with full rebuilds and involved renovations that are rooted in fulfilling the dreams and needs of the featured families.

But Breegan Jane, one of the show's star designers, has never been one to back down from a challenge. Looking back at her pre-show designs, there's one project in particular that stands out to her as a perfect example of her ability—and willingness—to tackle spaces that most would see as a disaster.

The space in question is a large bathroom that originally featured outdated blue tile, a blue tub, and a layout that Jane describes as "entirely wrong."

"There was absolutely no hope for this room, and nothing could be salvaged. Anyone else probably would have walked away from it," she tells MyDomaine. "It reminds me that I can take the most unsightly space and turn it into a masterpiece."

Seeing the finished project, it's hard to imagine that the room was ever in a less stylish state. Jane masterfully infused the space with a mixture of cultural elements to create a vibe that she describes as "calming, inviting, alluring."

"Because I kept colors muted, I was able to bring in a French mirror, a Moroccan light, and modern tile flooring and slabs, and make it work flawlessly," she explains. "To use all of that in one space may seem chaotic or unmethodical to some, but it worked here because I kept the overall style calm."

Not only does the calm, neutral color palette make the variety of cultural elements work harmoniously, it also adds a spa-like quality to the space. Another element that feels positively spa-like? The oversized tub and statement chandelier.

"I love the way a chandelier frames in any space, but I especially love it as a complement to the serenity of the tub and the Moroccan elements," Jane explains. "One element wouldn’t have the same effect without the other. The combination presents a soothing atmosphere with a subtle cultural charm, and I really enjoy that aesthetically."

Overall though, Jane appreciates this project not only for its aesthetic appeal, but for the affect it had on her own life and career.

"This room exudes much of what the Breegan Jane signature stands for," she explains. "More than that, though, it reflects my growth and expertise as a designer. In that respect, this room symbolizes just the tip of my creative iceberg. This project gave me more confidence as a designer, and it has challenged and propelled me to incorporate more cultural elements in a space without the safety net of a color palette."
